Are you always looking for healthier snacks? They are so much better for you and they are great to put in your children's lunches. The very generous folks at Newman's Own Organics sent me 30 full size products to review! Wow, was I surprised to receive so many wonderful snacks! They were all delicious, the whole family loved them! Newman's told me I can pick out 4 of my favorite products from 4 different categories for a giveaway for one of my lucky readers!
That was a tough decision to pick only 4 products. The first one would be the "Family Recipe Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies", the second would be the "Espresso Dark Chocolate Bar", the third would be the "Fat Free Fig Newmans" and the last one would be the "Licorice Twists - Tangerine Flavor"! Let me tell you about the products!
Newman's Own Organic Chocolate BarsNell Newman can't resist chocolate and they're always looking for the best source of organic cocoa beans. Nell Newman is the co-founder and president of the company. The chocolate used in these bars is some of the best they've ever come across. Carefully selected organic cocoa beans and other fine ingredients were used to produce a line of chocolate with richer flavors and a creamy, smooth texture. In recognition of this exceptional product, they are paying a premium above and beyond the market price for organic cocoa beans.
The chocolate bars are available in two sizes: 3.25-ounce and 2.25-ounce, in the following flavors:
- Dark Chocolate
- Super Dark Chocolate 70% Cocoa - NEW!
- Mocha Milk Chocolate - NEW!
- Milk Chocolate
- Espresso Dark Chocolate
- Orange Dark Chocolate
Newman's Own Organic Licorice TwistsNewman's Own Organics introduces the first licorice twist made with organic ingredients. Licorice twists are the most popular kind of licorice candy and the twists are available in today's favorite flavors, Black and Strawberry, along with two new fruit flavors, Pomegranate and Tangerine. The suggested retail price for the 5 oz. package is $2.99.
The five ounce package is great for keeping in your desk at work, having as a snack at home, in your car while doing errands, or out hiking. The smaller package is also a good economic choice.
Health conscious consumers will appreciate that the rich tasting candy is low in fat, sodium and cholesterol free, and contains no trans-fat.
Newman's Own Organic MintsThe organic mints come in four flavors. The Cinnamon, Ginger, Peppermint and Wintergreen varieties are packed in eye-catching 1.76 ounce tins with colorful cover designs designating their flavor. They carry the USDA organic seal on the back ingredient panel.
They were delighted with the illustrations for the tins and thought they'd be fun to use for other purposes after the mints are eaten. The inner paper does carry the familiar logo.
Newman's Own Organic Dried FruitNewman's Own Organics introduces 3 new items to their line of organic dried fruits! In addition to their current stars Raisins, Cranberries, and Pitted Prunes, they now have Apples, Apricots and a Berry Blend. The dried fruit line is 100% organic and contains no sulfites. They are proud to partner with U.S. Certified Organic Farmers and Processors whose commitment to organic practices makes these wonderful dried fruits available to you. Purchasing their organic products supports their efforts, states Nell Newman, Co-founder and President of Newman's Own Organics.
Dried fruits have gone beyond their traditional roles and are now replacing high-fat, high-sugar snacks and drinks. Prunes, once thought of only for the older set, are being touted for their high antioxidant qualities; second only to blueberries. Raisins, always a treat, have made the leap from the lunch box and oven to trail mix, granola, and other mixed snacks. Cranberries are not just for holiday sauce anymore. They add zip to fruit salads and stuffings, are tossed into mixed snacks, are baked into muffins, breads, and cookies, or, like the others, are perfect for eating alone. Apricots are a healthy, delicious treat right out of the package. Or, try adding them to yogurt, cereal, salad, or desserts. All can be used to add a special flavor to today's ethnic recipes and family favorites, as well as continuing to be a staple for bakers.
Newman's Own Organic Fig NewmansMulling over a name for daughter Nell's new line of fig cookies, Paul Newman suddenly smiled and said "Let's call them Fig Newmans. With Nells recipe and Paul's inspiration, the first fig bar made with organic figs, organic sugar, organic flour, and without hydrogenated oils was created. The new cookie wouldn't have come to fruition without the cooperation of Kraft, as the name is being used under license from them. They really salute Kraft for all their help with their Fig Newmans, stated Paul Newman. People loved the name, but without Kraft's consent we never could have created this product.
Nell has wanted to do a fig cookie for a long time. "Mom loves figs, so I grew up eating and enjoying them, and Dad has always been a big Fig Newton fan," says Nell. When they were doing research on figs they found that there are a number of organic fig growers in California, but the supply exceeded the demand. They are delighted to be able to support these growers with their product.
Fig Newmans are available in:
- Fat Free
- Low Fat
- palm fruit oil is plant derived
- has no cholesterol
- is lower in saturated fat than butter
- contains no trans-fatty acids
Newman's Own Organics PretzelsClever looking little pretzels, aren't they? Yes, and they taste great, too. Pretzels were always Paul's favorite snack. That's why they started the company with them," says Nell. They have a perfect pretzel for every occasion. They have fourteen varieties to choose from.
The packages with their distinctive, eye-catching bags feature an American Gothic "Pa" Newman and daughter Nell. They come in 7 oz. to 8oz. bags and in rounds, sticks, nuggets, minis or thins. Since they're baked (not fried), their pretzels make a great low-fat, healthy snack. The Bavarian-Style sourdough are fat-free, while the other pretzels have only 1 to 1.5 gram fat (no trans-fat).
The Rounds come in salted, unsalted, and a unique salt-and-pepper flavor. They like to say, "They're hot, but not too hot!" Bavarian-Style sourdough come in a larger twist style. The Minis include spelt and hi-protein. Spelt has a light, slightly sweet, nutty flavor. With a stronger outer hull than either oats or wheat it seems to keep more of the nutty grain taste and good nutrients locked inside. By using yellow pea flour, they were able to create a hi-protein pretzel with 5 grams of protein per serving.
Sticks are available in salted, unsalted, salt-and-pepper variety with a salted rod-size. Their Salted Nuggets are travel-friendly. These are "no crumbs, no mess" pretzels that are great for cars or in the office to keep tell-tale crumbs off your desk. For those who have requested a thicker stick, they now offer Rods.
Newman's Own Organics HermitsNewman’s Own Organics has added Hermits, an old-fashioned soft cookie, to its popular cookie line. The cookies are available in three flavors: Original, Cinnamon, and Ginger. The 9 oz. package with the familiar Nell and “Pa” Newman logo contain twelve cookies. Hermits were a family favorite when I was growing up, say Nell Newman, co-founder and president of the company. Their recipe, which is based on one they used to make at home, is filled with their delicious organic raisins and sweetened with organic molasses. These spicy, chewy cookies are said to have originated in Colonial New England.
Newman's Own Organics Newman O's and Ginger O'sThey've expanded their popular Newman-O's line with the addition of Peanut Butter Crème Filled Chocolate Cookies in a 9 oz. package. Also available in this size will be the original Crème, Chocolate Crème, Mint Crème, Crème Filled Ginger Cookies, and Wheat Free, Dairy Free Crème, as well as in the larger 16 oz. package.
They've been listening to their consumers. They requested a smaller size that is more economical and suitable for the single person, small family, or those counting calories who find the larger packages too tempting. The new peanut butter crème was one they thought kids and adults would both enjoy.
Newman-O's join Champion Chip Cookies and Fig Newmans in the popular cookie line. All the division's chocolate products include organic cacao that comes from small farmers in the Talamanca region on the Atlantic coast of Costa Rica and Panama. Some of these farms provide important buffer zones for the La Amistad Biosphere Reserve, a habitat for endangered mammal and bird species. Growing the cacao in the ancient way means that no rainforests need be destroyed. They encourage this method by supporting the farmers economically.
As in their other cookies, they are using organic palm fruit oil. It shouldn't, though, be confused with palm kernel oil. Organic palm fruit oil:
- Is not hydrogenated
- Contains no trans-fatty acids
- Is lower in saturated fat than butter and has no cholesterol
- Is widely used in Europe as an alternative to partially hydrogenated oils
- Is extracted from the palm's fruit not the palms kernel
- Can be grown organically in tropical regions
Of the three tropical oils, Palm Fruit Oil is 50% saturated, while Palm Kernel Oil is 86% and Coconut Oil is 92%.
