No More Winter Blues! - The Bright Light Therapy - The Day-light Sky Review

Print Friendly and PDF

Have you ever heard of Bright Light Therapy?  I never have, until I walked in a Care Medical store and happened to see it.  I thought it was worth checking out.  I contacted the sponsor to see if they would like to do a review and they excepted.  I thank them for their generosity!  It is for people that don't get enough light and this deficiency can lead to the Winter Blues or other issues.

My son has been very depressed, due to many mishaps in his life.  So, I thought this might make his life a little brighter, no pun intended.  He has worked graveyard most of the time and when he is home, he is usually in his bedroom, that doesn't get much light.  So, of course I think maybe their is a light deficiency.  My son's attitude has been much more positive, since he started using Bright Light Therapy.  He's laughing and enjoying life a lot more, then he use to.  It has been 4 weeks, since he started using it.  I call him everyday to see if he has been using the Day-light Sky.  He has missed a few days, but he said he makes sure on those days that he's out enjoying the sunshine.  So, in my opinion I would recommend this light, it has helped my son out.  I have read some great reviews on Amazon and they sound great.

Day-Light Sky – Bright Light Therapy System

The Day-Light Sky is a contemporary, discreet bright light therapy system used to combat symptoms associated with both seasonal and non-seasonal conditions.  BrightZoneTM Technology delivers 10,000 LUX in a broad field of illumination, as recommended by bright light therapy experts.

The smooth diffusing screen filters out 99.3% of the harmful UV rays, creating a glare-free light source.  Equipped with high efficiency ballasts, the Day-Light Sky eliminates the flicker commonly associated with regular fluorescent lights.

Designed to deliver optimal treatment by projecting the light downward over the user, the Day-Light Sky is also a task lamp.  Bright light therapy has been proven to be an effective treatment for the Winter Blues, Circadian Sleep Disorders, Jet Lag, Shift Work Adjustment and low energy.

The Day-Light Sky meets all of the criteria set out by the leading experts for safe and efficacious bright light therapy (please visit www.cet.org).

New medical research indicates that the Day-Light, a market leading light therapy product was proven to be as effective in treating SAD as antidepressant drugs.

The Day-Light was chosen as the light therapy device for a study by 7 doctors to test the effectiveness of light therapy versus an antidepressant in the treatment of winter Seasonal Affective Disorder.  Subjects used the Day-Light or the placebo light for 30 minutes (as soon as possible after awakening) between 7:00 and 8:00am.  The antidepressant or placebo pill were taken during the same time period.

To compare the effectiveness of light therapy and an antidepressant within a single trial.

Treatment Options

1. Day-Light 10,000 Lux Bright Light Therapy System and a placebo capsule
2. 100 Lux light treatment (placebo light – the Day-Light used with a neutral density filter) and fluoxetine 20 mg/day.

This study was a double-blind (neither the individuals or the experimenters knew who belonged to the control group or the experimental group), randomized, controlled trial conducted in four Canadian centers over three winter seasons.

Subjects had to meet the criteria for major depressive disorder with a seasonal (winter) pattern and had a score of 23 or lower on the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression.  This scale is a 24 item multiple choice questionnaire used by physicians to evaluate the level of depression in their patients through interview methods.

Subjects were randomly assigned to one of the above treatment options.

A total of 96 patients were randomly assigned to a treatment condition.  This study confirmed that there were no differences between the two treatments.  Both treatments were generally well-tolerated with no differences in overall number of adverse effects.

Those subjects receiving light therapy treatment showed an earlier response than those receiving fluoxetine 20 mg/day.  Also, these subjects displayed a lower rate of some adverse effects than those receiving fluoxetine.  Both light therapy treatment and antidepressants were found to be equally effective in the treatment of Winter Seasonal Effective Disorder.
