How many of you love to get a new cookbook? I love getting new cookbooks! For this review I received a copy of the Farm Fresh Southern Cooking, by Tammy Algood. This is a great cookbook, I have made 8 of the recipes and the family loved them. I really haven't done any southern cooking before, but when I got this book I couldn't wait to get started! The first recipe I tried was Apple Sheet Cake with Caramel Topping, oh was that ever delicious! That will be a family favorite! I had some left over mashed potatoes and I found a recipe that was just perfect, it was Mashed Potato Patties! My family loves potatoes and these were scrumptious! The recipes are easy to follow. If you're looking for a cookbook, that's a little different, this would be the cookbook! I would recommend this cookbook!
About Farm Fresh Southern CookingNo matter where in the South you may be, there is likely a farmers' market or an individual grower just as close as your neighborhood grocery store. Maybe there's a bustling Saturday market in the city park, or a farmer down the road who sells crowder peas and mustard greens from his front porch. Perhaps there's a truck parked at the same intersection every evening, overflowing with sweet potatoes and Vidalia onions. Be sure to stop and exchange a few dollars for a armload of the local harvest, and you'll understand the goodness of knowing that the food on your table was grown just a few miles from your doorstep. The sellers are an integral part of your community, and they can transform the way you eat.
Is there anything better than a kitchen counter top spread with the spoils of a Saturday morning at the farmers' market? Every trip yields some new assortment of old favorites and new found treasures. One week, you're tempted by the sun-warmed heirloom tomatoes and the Mason jars brimming with orange blossom honey. Another week, it's the slabs of milky Havarti cheese and the Red Haven peaches heavy with juice, enticing you to spend just a little more than you planned. Kentucky pole beans, silky ears of sweet corn, and sacks of stone-ground buckwheat flour may find their way into your basket on another visit.
Whether you shop with a list or purely on impulse, you'll always find the truest taste of home at the local farms, roadside stands, and produce markets in you community. These are the places that offers up the native flavors of the South and all its seasons. They are your portal to the fields, the waters, and the vines where your food is cultivated. Get to know the origins of what you eat and the people who produce it. Tammy Algood's Farm Fresh Southern Cooking celebrates this experience with delicious recipes that will enhance the natural flavors of your latest market haul and stories of the South's most dedicated growers and culinary producers.
