Moonrise Kingdom Movie Review

Print Friendly and PDF

Have you heard of the movie, Moonrise Kingdom?  My family and I watched it last night.  I thought it was a rather slow movie and a little strange.  In the movie, no one laughed and there was about five smiles, throughout the movie.  It was a story about young love.  Suzy and Sam are both twelve years old.  They are both troubled kids, for different reasons.  Sam is an orphan and is a very lonely boy.  Sam is in the Khaki Scout Troop and doesn't really fit in with the rest of the troop.  Suzy lives with her family of three brothers and arguing parents.  She found her mother's book titled "Coping With The Very Troubled Child", so she decides to runaway with Sam.  I kept watching it, to see what happened to Suzy and Sam.  Eventually, Suzy is returned to her family and Sam has a new guardian.

About Moonrise Kingdom

A star-studded and visually stunning box office hit, and a tale of first love directed by two-time Academy Award nominated filmmaker Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Rushmore), Focus Features’ Moonrise Kingdom will be available on Blu-ray Combo Pack with UltraViolet, on DVD, On Demand and on Digital Download on October 16, 2012, from Universal Studios Home Entertainment.  Set on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965, Moonrise Kingdom follows two 12-year-olds who fall in love, make a secret pact and run away together into the wilderness.  As various authorities try to hunt them down, a violent storm is brewing off-shore – and the peaceful island community is turned upside down in every which way.

Charming screen newcomers Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward star alongside Bruce Willis (Die Hard), Academy Award nominees Edward Norton (American History X) and Bill Murray (Lost in Translation), Academy Award winners Frances McDormand (Fargo) and Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton), Jason Schwartzman (Rushmore), and Bob Balaban (Gosford Park).  Moonrise Kingdom is a movie that critics are calling “extraordinary from start to finish” (Glenn Kenny, MSN Movies).

The Moonrise Kingdom Blu-ray Combo Pack includes a Blu-ray, DVD and a Digital Copy of the film compatible with iPhone, iTunes, iPad, iPod, iPod touch, Android and online retailer partners, as well as UltraViolet.  UltraViolet is the revolutionary new way for consumers to collect movies and TV shows in the cloud to instantly stream and download to tablets, smartphones, computers, and TVs.  Consumers can now enjoy their movies anytime, anywhere on the platform of their choice!

Khaki Scouts Guide to Protecting the Community

The Khaki Scouts use both their skills and pride to protect their community.  Here are the troops’ best tips for keeping everyone on New Penzance safe and secure.  Set on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965, two twelve-year-olds fall in love, make a secret pact, and run away together into the wilderness.  As various authorities try to hunt them down, a violent storm is brewing off-shore -- and the peaceful island community is turned upside down in more ways than anyone can handle.

Suit Up Troops

A key to protecting any community is to have a recognizable uniform that informs others you are an official authority figure. The Khaki Scouts are in tip top shape in their uniforms that include a beret, hankerchief, socks, boots, and colorful badges that adorn their khaki suits.  The distinctive outfits express confidence to the people of New Penzanze, making them trust in the protection of the Scouts.

Build High Headquarters

The Khaki Scouts build a treehouse that sits high in the sky in order for them to see everything on the island.  This ensures that they can always be on the lookout for trouble and see for miles if anyone is in danger.  Therefore, in order to really know what is going on in the community, one must have an excellent overview of the land.  In addition to building a tall tower of operation, it is also important to stock up with the essentials just as the Scouts did – playing cards, snacks, and pillows are a must.

Gadgets and Gear Galore

The Khaki Scouts mean real business when they are protecting their community, and use effective gadgets and threatening weapons to ward off any opposing forces!  The best supplies to have on hand are special tools for unzipping locked tents and an array of weapons including guns, axes, and nail-bolted bludgeons.  And don’t forget a motorcycle to ride to the scene of a crime in a speedy fashion.

When In Doubt, Turn To Family

Once the Khaki Scouts realize that Sam and Suzy are meant to be together, they turn to Cousin Ben, played by Jason Schwartzman, for extra help.  Cousin Ben is not only related to one of the scouts, but also works at the bigger summer camp, Fort Lebanon.  His experience and skills come in handy as he leads the scouts on their secret mission.  It is always a good idea to turn to trusted family and close friends in times of trouble for additional support.

Extreme Times Call for Extreme Measures

The Khaki Scouts step up their game to help the community during the hectic flood.  They work together as a team to lift people out from the rain and bring them to shelter.  Instead of panicking in a tough environment, the Scouts remain alert and and dedicated to helping the people.  Therefore, no matter how extreme the situation becomes, one must remember to join with a team to do whatever it takes to protect the community.

This is an odd little movie that is not really about laughs or drama, rather it is really about the characters. It is just about getting to know them and their problems so that we can identify and learn from them. It is not for everyone, but it will surely warm your heart if you can get into it. I loved this movie when I saw it in theaters, so I was really excited to rent it when a coworker at DISH told me it was coming out on DVD. I would have loved to buy it, but with so many big movies coming to DVD I decided to spend the money on a month of Blockbuster @Home, so I can see them all. I liked it even more the second time around because I had time to notice all of the little details that are packed into every scene and create the wonderful sense of atmosphere that this movie has.
