Classic Snacks Made From Scratch Review and Giveaway - Ends 03-15-13

Print Friendly and PDF

Homemade snacks are the best, instead of the bought goodies!  If you read the labels, some of the ingredients are bad for you or something you never even heard of.  A while back, I read an article called, What's really in the food?  The A to Z of the food industry's most evil ingredients, after I read that I decided to try and make as much as I can from scratch!  I like to know what's in my food and I have really started reading the labels.  Now, when I shop and I see a new product, the first thing I do is read the label and if I recognize an ingredient that is not good for you, I just put it back.

About the Classic Snacks Made From Scratch

For this review I received an opportunity to review the "Classic Snacks Made From Scratch" cookbook!  My first reaction was, WOW!  Now, I can have my goodies and know exactly what's in it!  Wouldn't it be nice if junk food wasn't full of junk?  This book answers that dilemma by serving up recipes for delicious, preservative-free treats made with the good, old-fashioned ingredients - flour, sugar, and butter.  These recipes faithfully reproduce beloved snacks and nostalgic vending machine classics, like Nutter Butters, Nacho Cheese Doritos, Funnyuns, Klondike Bars and Animal Crackers!

The author, Casey Barber talks about useful tools and ingredients to make you become a better cook and baker.  I never really thought about some of the tools she mentioned, but after reading why you should have the tools, it makes perfect sense and it will save you time.

Here are the tools she mentions and why you should add those to your kitchen:
  • Kitchen Scale:  The best way to guarantee accuracy and consistency when measuring isn't to use cups or spoons: it's to use a kitchen scale.
  • Stand Mixer:  A stand mixer handles tasks that would otherwise kill your arms or take a lot of time to do by hand.
  • Food Processor:  The food processor is the most efficient tool in your kitchen for making pie crust and, the mini food processor is crucial for grinding spices and herbs into fine powders.
  • Ruler:  A ruler comes in handy when you roll out dough and, to divide that dough into equal-size rectangles and squares for crackers and pastries.
  • Silpat Baking Liners:  Silpat are washables, reusable silicone baking mats that take the place of parchment paper for lining your baking sheets and they will save you a ton of money.
  • Mandoline  or Slicer:  Mandoline or Slicer are perfect for potato chips and thin slices, which are crucial for thin , like translucent slices.
  • Thermometers:  Two types of thermometers are recommended, a plain old digital thermometer to dip in and out of chocolate, along with a digital candy/oil thermometer that clips to the side of a pot.
  • Pastry Bags and Piping Tips:  The silicone pastry bags, that cleans up great and piping tips, are perfect for piping and doodling icing.
  • Deep Fryer:  A Deep Fryer is the multi-tasker in the kitchen, by combining a heat source, temperature control and oil storage in one machine.
  • Ice Cream Maker:  The ice cream maker is a perfect tool for frozen treats.

After thumbing through the pages, I was very impressed with all of the recipes and a bit surprised of all the awesome treats this cookbook has.  I didn't know what recipe to try first, so I settled on the Oreos and Pizza Rolls.  They tasted awesome and the family loved them!  I would definitely recommend the Classic Snacks Made From Scratch!
