Kay's Gluten Free High Protein Pretzel Breading and Pretzel Sticks Review

Print Friendly and PDF

A product sample was received for review.  I was not paid in any form of cash for this posting.  The opinions expressed are my own and were NOT influenced in any way.

My family and I don't really follow any type of diet, we pretty much eat anything we want.  We like to eat a variety of different foods and fried foods is one of them.  We eat a lot of fish and chicken, sometimes, we bake it and other times we deep fry it.  For this review I received three different kinds of Kay's Natural Breading and three different types of Pretzels.  The breading came in some interesting flavors, Chili Nacho Flavor, Sesame Pretzel Flavor and Parmesan Flavor.  The Pretzels came in the Original, Jalapeño Honey Mustard and Cinnamon Toast Flavor.

Since, I was going to do some deep frying, I stopped by my local Fred Meyers and grabbed some wild cod.  I already had some chicken fillets up in the freezer, so I grabbed a couple of those.  I gathered a few other things to deep fry, like pickles, zucchini, cheese sticks, along with the cod and chicken breast.  I decided to use Olive Oil to fry it in, instead of the vegetable oil.  Olive Oil doesn't need to be as hot as vegetable oil for frying, which I didn't know.

I used all three bags of breading, my favorite was the Chili Nacho Breading!  We enjoyed the Pretzels with our fried foods, my favorite was the Jalapeño Honey Mustard Pretzels!  I like foods that have a little kick to it!  The number one thing, I like best about the Kay's High Protein Breading is that it has 30% less fat up-take than traditional breading!  So, I would recommend the Kay's High Protein Breading and the Pretzels were great for snacking!

About Kay's Naturals

At Kay’s Naturals they have surveyed the vast landscape of so-called nutritious foods and determined that the missing link is a Better Balance of protein, carbohydrates, fiber and fats.  Kay’s all-natural, gluten-free line seeks to fill this gap with food that has a healthy balance of great taste, low calories, lean soy protein, zero cholesterol, lower carbohydrates and high fiber.  Their foods also provide a complete amino acid profile.

A recent study from Harvard Medical School found that most gluten free products currently available in the market place are high in starch and that many gluten-free formulations lack essential nutrients.

How is Kay’s Naturals Different?

Kay’s Naturals has chosen to focus on a healthier balance of ingredients:
  • Certified (CGFO) gluten-free
  • 35% natural soy protein
  • 4 - 12% healthy fats
  • 12% fiber
  • 20 - 45% carbohydrates
Every 1.2-ounce (34g) serving has:
  • 12g natural soy protein
  • 120 - 130 calories
  • 11g -15g net carbohydrates
  • 4g - 5g fiber
  • Low saturated fats/no trans fats

Cost of Protein vs. Cost of Sugar and Starch

Most snacks and cereals are made of 80-90% starch and sugar.  This is because starch and sugar are cheap.  Protein, on the other hand, costs 15-20 times more than starch or sugar.  Thus, most snack and cereal companies avoid using protein in their foods, and even when they use protein, it is only a small percentage (8-10%) of the final product.

Kay’s Naturals products are 35% protein.  In addition, all Kay’s Naturals foods are always free of artificial sweeteners, flavors, colors and preservatives.

I didn't realize that protein costs so much more to put in foods. Kay's Naturals sounds like a very good product. I too like the 30% less fat up-take than traditional breading. I think I'd like the Sesame Pretzel flavor breading the most.
