So, many elderly people are getting Alzheimer's disease or dementia. Did you know that there are some supplements that can help with memory, concentration and alertness? Green tea and gingko biloba extract have been used to improve memory! I'm all for supplements that will help improve your health, especially as you get older.
With all the processed foods out on the market today, do you really think you are getting enough nutrients that your body needs to keep you healthy? I would have to say no to that. There are also many additives, preservatives and chemicals of some sort in just about everything we eat. So, you really need to read labels on anything you're going to consume and that includes any type of supplements! Supplements can also have additives, preservatives and chemicals. So, make sure you read your labels! If you don't know what the ingredient is, do a search on the internet and find out what it is.
ExcelerolFor this review, I received a box of Excelerol Liquid Vcaps! When I read the label of ingredients I was very impressed, with some of the ingredients. As I continued to read the label my impression of this supplement changed. Two of the ingredients, really struck me, as being odd in a supplement, that would be the FD&C Blue #1 and FD&C Yellow. Food dyes are a dangerous additive, so why would a company put them in a supplement? I'm really allergic to dyes, especially FD&C Yellow, it makes me itch uncontrollably. With that being said, I would not recommend this product!
If you read the ingredients below, you will see that just about all the ingredients are very healthy for you, except a few of them. All of my resources are linked to each ingredient and it will tell you about the ingredient.
Vitamin B-12 (Methylcobalamin) - Methylcobalamin is the only type of B12 you should consume, it can help with neurologic diseases and it also helps with the elimination of toxic substances in the body.
Niacin (as Niacinamide the non-flushing type of Vitamin B3) - Niacinamide may be useful for treating osteoarthritis, depression and anxiety.
Guarana Extract - Guarana contains higher levels of caffeine, than coffee, a few unpleasant effects are to be expected. Commonly reported ones include being jittery, restless or nervous, a boosted heart rate, more frequent urination, insomnia, appetite loss, headaches, nausea and heartburn.
Kola Nut Extract - Kola Nut Extract is a Stimulant, used as a weight-loss aid. It effectively suppresses hunger and fight fatigue, but it does contains a high quantity of caffeine. It has also been a remedy for headaches, rheumatism, whooping cough and asthma, but it does have side effect, as in consuming too much caffeine! It should be avoided by those suffering from heart conditions, because it can lead to an increased heart rate, as well as high blood pressure.
DMAE - DMAE is used to treat many conditions and illnesses associated, with the brain and the central nervous system. Using DMAE is very beneficial to your health. It's used to treat ADHD, Alzheimer's disease, dementia, depression and improving memory. Side effects that can occur are insomnia, headaches and muscle tension, with high doses of DMAE. People with manic depression, epilepsy, or bipolar disorder should not take DMAE.
Acetyl L-Carnitine - Studies suggest, that Acetyl L-carnitine may be able to slow down, or even reverse, brain deterioration. It may even give people the ability to think clearer and remember things. If you're worried about developing Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease or age-associated dementia, studies suggest that acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) may delay the onset of the disease.
Bacopa Monnieri Extract - Bacopa can improve cognitive function and mental performance. A study done on bacopa reported that we can learn a new task faster, by 50 percent! Bacopa improves memory and recall abilities, because it contains bacosides, which are chemical compounds that can repair damaged neurons, thus improving nerve impulse transmission. Bacopa is an excellent guard against age-related cognitive deterioration, as well as mental diseases like Alzheimer's disease and dementia. You're probably noticing a trend here: bacopa is good for the mind, period! Yes, bacopa is also linked to improved mood (including relief from depression, anxiety, stress, and nervousness) because its chemical properties support the effects of mood-regulating neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and acetylcholine. This makes it an excellent natural anti-depressant that lacks the horrible side effects of Prozac or Xanax.
It also, supports the production of beneficial mucus in the gastrointestinal tract, protecting us from stomach ulcers, intestinal dryness, and constipation. Also, since bacopa protects the villi in the intestine (which are responsible for absorbing nutrients), it also helps us to absorb more important vitamins and minerals from our food.
Bacopa monnieri has been shown to relax bronchioles, which often become irritated or inflamed from respiratory conditions, such as asthma or stress-induced shallow breathing. Bacopa also relaxes the blood vessel muscles around our airway passages, which improves our breathing quality.
Peppermint Oil - People are recommended to use peppermint to enhance memory, because it can prevent several health conditions that lead to memory disorders.
Tulsi (Holy Basil) Extract - Holy Basil enhances cerebral circulation and improves memory. You can treat ADHD and ADD, with Holy Basil. It reduces mental fog. It can improve digestion, boost the immune system and promote cardiovascular health. It helps to promote a relaxed and balanced state.
It balances the hormones and helps maintain healthy cortisol levels. It has anti-inflammatory properties, as well. It's helpful in maintaining normal blood sugar levels too. Holy Basil is often used to treat coughs, sore throats and the common cold, as it boosts the body’s ability to resist viral and bacterial infections and fevers. It promotes a healthy respiratory system and can be used to treat bronchitis, asthma and allergies.
It’s also good for maintaining a healthy digestive system, relieving cramps and gas. It is good for the eyes and protects against some forms of radiation. It contains compounds that are antioxidant in nature, helping protect the body against dangerous free radicals and oxidation.
Holy Basil is good for the liver and promotes it’s healthy functioning. It can eliminate harmful chemicals in the bloodstream and protects against liver disease. It also has the ability to strengthen the kidneys.
This herb is also useful in maintaining dental health and reduces bad breath.
Green Tea Extract - Green Tea provides an antioxidant that lowers the risk of cancer, lowers the risk of developing dementia and can even boost metabolism to assist weight loss efforts. The super nutrients known, as catechins found in green tea also help increase memory recall and cognitive abilities.
Gingko Biloba Extract - Gingko Biloba helps regulate mood, energy levels, thought processes and mental function in general. Ginkgo leaves include flavonoid glycosides and terpenoids that posses strong antioxidant properties, which are also responsible for its nootropic effects and other health benefits.
Various studies have reported that ginkgo extract can vastly improve attention and memory in healthy people. In fact, one of these studies concluded that the results of the supplement were almost immediate, with peak performance occurring two and a half hours after ingestion.
Rhodiola Extract - Rhodiola Rosea Extract is an adaptogen, which is a natural supplements that helps the ability to improve the human response to physical and/or mental stress and trauma. The adaptogens help balance the immune system and endocrine hormones. An adaptogen is a natural herbal substance that improves the body’s resistance, while also normalizing its functions, particularly under rigorous or stressful mental or physical conditions. It can also benefit the imbalance of the central nervous system monoamines.
Studies have indicated that Rhodiola Rosea Extract can reduce recovery time after extended workouts, improve attention span, improve memory, raises memorization and concentration capability, over extended periods.
Rhodiola Rosea Extract has been successful in treating mild depression and anxiety. Rhodiola. Rosea helps the heart during emotional and physical stress. It has been effective in treating cardiac afflictions, caused or provoked by stress.
Rhodiola Rosea Extract can help increase the anti-tumor activity, by improving the body’s resistance to toxins. A range of anti-oxidant compounds have been discovered, within rhodiola rosea and considerable free-radical scavenging action has been exhibited in extracts (both alcohol-based and water-based).
Rhodiola Rosea Extract appear to heighten the transfer of serotonin precursors tryptophan and 5-HTP (or 5-hydroxytryptophan) into our brains. Serotonin is a broadly analyzed brain neurotransmitter chemical, which appears to be involved in several functions, including temperature regulation, appetite, pain perception, behavior, blood pressure and respiration.
There are many benefits, including the ability to amend hearing, to regulate blood sugar levels for diabetics and to protect the liver from environmental toxins. In addition, some early studies indicate rhodiola rosea may activate the lipolytic operations (fat breakdown) and mobilize lipids from adipose tissue to the natural fat burning system of the body for weight reduction.
Phosphatidylserine - Phosphatidylserine deficiency is linked to mental impairment, including Alzheimer's and non-Alzheimer's dementia, depression and Parkinson's disease among middle-aged and elderly people. Experts believe that Phosphatidylserine supplements can help improve, or even reverse, symptoms.
L-Tyrosine - One of the biggest L-Tyrosine benefits, is that this amino acid increases the metabolic rate of the body. A higher metabolism means an easier time achieving a normal weight and maintaining it. Appetite suppression is another one of the top l-tyrosine benefits. L-Tyrosine can improve endurance and help the body go longer before physical fatigue sets in. An increase in the amount of energy available to the body is another benefit of this amino acid.
L-tyrosine can be used in the treatment of depression. This amino acid is needed to produce some neurotransmitters, which affect the mood and emotional well being, a deficiency can cause depression in individuals. Mental alertness is increased and it is easier to concentrate and focus mentally.
L-Tyrosine will help, with thyroid function. Anyone with a low thyroid function can benefit from supplementation of this amino acid, whether this is done with food or supplement products.
White Tea Extract - White Tea has anti-viral, antibacterial properties and can be used topically on the skin.
Black Tea Extract - Black Tea Extract offers health benefits, that include preventing cancer growth, averting clogged arteries, reversing weak arterial flow and knocking out viruses, like pneumonia, diarrhea, and certain skin conditions.
Alpha Glycerylphosphorylcholine - Alpha Glycerylphosphorylcholine activates cholinergic transmission, which increase the brain functions and permits the development of more strength from work-outs and training programs.
Citicoline - Citicoline can help people struggling, with memory troubles. Citicoline is principally used in assisting, with short-run and long lasting memory.
Huperzine Extract - Huperzine A is a Chinese club moss, that can help treat dementias, such as Alzheimer's disease. Dementia is an increasing deficiency in thought processes caused by brain damage or disease.
Vinpocetine - Vinpocetine can enhance memory and mental function, especially in those with Alzheimer's disease and related conditions. It's also widely marketed for enhancing memory in healthy people, but there is no real evidence that it is helpful for this purpose.
Glycerin - Glycerin is used in a variety of medications, for edema, relief of constipation, weight loss and to reduce cranial pressure caused, by increased spinal fluid due to stroke or meningitis. There are side effects reported from taking glycerin products orally, such as allergic reactions, shortness of breath and numbness or swelling of the tongue, lips or face.
Hypromelose (Vegetarian) - I think this may be spelled wrong on the label. The only thing that I can find on a search engine is Hypromellose. Hypromellose is a ingredient of non-animal derived gel capsules (so-called "veggie capsules") in natural supplements and prescription medicines, but may not be all that natural.
Titanium Dioxide - Titanium Dioxide, which is often used as a pigment in vitamins and supplements, comes with its own set of health risks. An untested nanoparticle powder made from titanium bits, titanium dioxide has been linked to causing autoimmune disorders, cancer, and various other diseases. Besides the fact, that it belongs to a class of particles known to cause cell damage.
FD&C Blue #1 and FD&C Yellow - Food dyes are one of the most widely used and dangerous additives.
Extracts Derived from Soy - Soy has been linked to many health issues and is not recommend by Dr. Mercola.
