How To Stay Fit While Traveling

#1 Before you set off

Making sure you’re in tip-top shape starts at home. So before you jet off into the sunset, you need to start preparing. Fitness is important, especially if you’re planning on a spot of adventure travel; a regular exercise regime or joining the gym can do the world of good. Traveling with a general anxiety disorder can be pretty stressful but definitely doable if you employ the right strategies, such as keeping a check on negative thoughts, breathing, and exercising. And once you’ve got that in place, there are a couple more things for you to think about…

#2 Immunizations

Getting ill anywhere is never fun but getting ill abroad can be scary. Preparation is essential; the first thing you need to do is get your jabs. Everywhere is different so which ones you’ll need depends on where you’re traveling. The best thing to do is speak to your doctor about safety precautions and find out what they recommend.

Possible jabs include:

  • Hepatitis B
  • Typhoid
  • Hepatitis A
  • Yellow fever
  • Meningitis
  • Rabies

#3 Medication

If you have any medical conditions, it’s better to be cautious. So when you visit your doctor to talk about immunizations, it’s a good idea to ask what else you need to do to prepare. In most cases, with regular medication, you’ll just need a prescription to see you through your travels. In others, you might have to make arrangements to see a doctor while you’re away; the most important thing is to make sure you take enough to last your entire trip.

Other medical supplies that you might want to take with you include:

  • Pain killers
  • Re-hydration tablets
  • Throat lozenges
  • Cold remedies
  • A first aid kit
  • Alcohol-based hand washes
  • Toothpaste and toothbrush

#4 Make a checklist

Traveling inevitably has an impact on your health. In some cases, it’s what’s involved in the travel itself, while in others may be what you do while you’re away. Preparing is really important. For example, if you’re traveling by plane, make sure you bring everything you need while onboard such as medication and your favorite music. Eliminate stress by packing in advance and making a checklist.

#5 Design a diet

If you travel often for work, chances are, you might find it difficult to squeeze in the time to work out. Some hotel gyms may not have decent equipment and working out with strangers in a strange city might not sound like your idea of fun. When you travel for business, you tend to dine out a lot, so maintaining a balanced lifestyle can be quite a challenge. If you travel often for business, a great idea is to ask a professional to design a customized diet and exercise plan for you to help you stay on track.

#6 Forget the guilt

Be clear about what you want out of your holidays but don’t pack your itinerary too tightly. Take time out to smell the roses. Treat yourself to what you deserve and if you’re on a budget, it’s ok to be kind to yourself once in a while and stay at a 5-star resort. If you want to save your money, then there are some great youth hostels to choose from or camping sites.

#7 Wake up an hour earlier

One of the best ways to stay fit when you travel is to make sure you get your daily dose of exercise. Wake up an hour earlier each morning and stick to a regiment of exercises. You’ll feel better able to tackle the day.

#8 Go walking or jogging

Pack your jogging shoes and hit the streets. Jogging or walking is a universal exercise that will help you learn more about your destination too. You’ll be amazed at the sights you come across while on foot.
